Visiting Exeter

Exeter is a historic and lively city, offering a unique mix of culture, heritage, and natural beauty that makes it a wonderful location for our Society’s meeting. Situated in the heart of Devon, Exeter is home to the remarkable Exeter Cathedral—a Gothic marvel with over 900 years of history—surrounded by cobbled streets lined with charming independent shops, cafes, and restaurants.

For those interested in history, Exeter’s Roman roots and historic quayside offer much to discover, from the city’s fascinating underground passages to intriguing museums. Nature enthusiasts will find Exeter to be a gateway to the beautiful Devon countryside, with the scenic Exe Estuary and Dartmoor National Park close by.

Jon Higgins has provided a walking map of Exeter (below) which highlights key points of interest, historic sites, and scenic areas. Key landmarks include: St. Nicholas Priory, Exeter Cathedral, Guildhall, Underground Passages and Exeter Quayside. Scans or printed A3 copies are available from Jon beforehand or during the meeting.

With its blend of accessibility, historic charm, and warm atmosphere, Exeter promises visitors an enriching experience beyond the society’s meetings. We encourage you to explore and enjoy all that this welcoming city has to offer!
