A Philatelic Journey Through Brunei by Jim Howard

We are delighted to inform our fellow members, particularly those in Australia, that one of our members, Jim Howard, will be giving a talk and display on Brunei philately in collaboration with the Brighton Philatelic Society.

Everyone is warmly invited to attend Jim’s presentation, who will be showing his award-winning exhibit of Brunei’s postal history spanning 1895 to 1951. This 8-frame exhibit contains die proofs, colour trials, specimens and plate changes and Japanese occupation material. Jim will also show a one-frame Civil Censorship of Brunei, along with other fascinating items of interest.

Jim serves as Vice President of the Philatelic Society of South Australia. He is also a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of London, Borneo Philatelic Society (previously Sarawak Specialist Society), Malaya Study Group, Civil Censorship Study Group, International Society for Japanese Philately, Brighton Philatelic Society of Victoria and Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria.

His passion for Borneon philately was sparked in childhood when his uncle, a timber trader, gifted him stamps from Sarawak. In 2003, Jim joined a Sarawak Specialist Society field trip to Borneo, where he noticed a lack of Brunei exhibits—this challenge inspired his deep focus on Brunei philately. While he collects stamps from all Malayan and Bornean states, Brunei remains his specialty. He has also contributed articles to The Sarawak Journal and the Civil Censorship Study Group Bulletin.

Update: A scan of Jim’s exhibition is now available in our Display page.
